In the latest food safety news… the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shut down the country’s largest organic peanut butter processor earlier this week. This is the first time the Agency has used the fancy new power afforded it under the Food Safety Modernization Act.
The FSMA gives the FDA the power to suspend a company’s registration when food manufactured or held there has a “reasonable probability of causing serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals”. Following yesterday’s post, I came across this article in today’s Globe and Mail. The article talks about a vaccine for cattle that would reduce the risk of E. coli to consumers that has been developed by a Canadian company, Bioniche Life Sciences Inc.
Bioniche has a food safety division, which (according to its website) “is responsible for researching, developing, manufacturing, and marketing veterinary biopharmaceutical products to address diseases in livestock which may have an effect on human health”. A recent recall on frozen beef products in Canada is causing quite the stampede. The recall relates to beef products produced over a period of seven months, healing from July 1, purchase 2011 to February 15, 2012, including some products that have been distributed nationally through restaurants and institutional establishments.
